01 / UNDERSTAND

The front of the thigh: a pattern to explore.

Femoral neuralgia may be related to irritation of the upper lumbar nerve roots, particularly L3 or L4. Pain is often at the front of the thigh and may reach the knee.

01

The pattern and side

Specify painful, numb or sensitive areas without limiting yourself to the word “sciatica”.

02

Stairs and walking

Describe the difficulty and any new feeling of weakness or a knee that gives way.

03

The hip and knee

Pain in this area may have origins other than a lumbar nerve root.

Useful distinctions

Femoral neuralgia and sciatica generally do not follow the same pattern. The examination must also consider local hip or knee problems or other nerves.

YOUR CONSULTATION IN MONTREAL

A useful resource for Montreal / Mont-Royal.

For your visit in Mont-Royal, mentally trace the pattern from the back or groin to the knee and note what happens on stairs. New weakness should lead to prompt medical advice without waiting for a routine care appointment.

02 / EXPLORE THE OPTIONS

Spinal decompression: a discussion based on your clinical profile.

The choice of care begins with your history, current signs and symptoms, and goals. A condition mentioned in a report does not dictate a treatment method.

  1. 1

    Clarify your situation

Specify the areas that are painful, numb or sensitive, without limiting your description to the word “sciatica”. Existing examination results and previous care add to the discussion.

  2. 2

    Discuss options and precautions

Non-surgical spinal decompression, adapted exercise, targeted osteopathic care or medical referral: relevant options are explained according to your situation and the limitations of each.

  3. 3

    Track specific changes

Observe walking and a chosen activity while monitoring changes in strength and sensation.

Read the TAGMED guide
Suitability, limitations and other options

Before discussing decompression, a possible lumbar origin must first be clarified. Thigh pain alone is not enough to determine suitability. Spinal decompression uses motorized traction; results vary and no individual benefit can be guaranteed. NICE advises against traction for low back pain with or without sciatica. This recommendation, the uncertainties and the alternatives must be explained. Read the NICE guidelines.

Where can I seek care for this condition in Montreal?

TAGMED Clinic welcomes you at 1140 avenue Beaumont, Mont-Royal (Québec) H3P 3E5, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., by appointment. Availability and confirmation are provided through Medexa.

Is femoral neuralgia another form of sciatica?

Both may be pain originating in lumbar nerve roots, but they generally involve different roots and patterns: more towards the front of the thigh for femoral neuralgia, and more towards the buttock and back or side of the leg for sciatica.

Can knee pain come from the back?

It is one possibility among others. The hip, knee and nerve structures must be considered to avoid automatically attributing the pain to the disc.

Could decompression be considered in my situation?

Discussing non-surgical spinal decompression first requires clarification of a possible lumbar origin. Thigh pain alone is not enough to determine suitability.

How many sessions should I plan for?

The name of a condition cannot determine the number of sessions. Goals, tolerance and progress should guide the development and reassessment of the plan. Also ask when a change in approach would be needed.

Are consultations reimbursed?

Osteopathy receipts may be issued. Check your policy conditions and whether your insurer recognizes the practitioner. Services are not covered by RAMQ.
